The specialty of the architects is to focus on creating designs. Not all architects can predict structural issues and complications. Many are unfamiliar with building techniques and do not have the knowledge to work on a difficult site, a hillside ravine or on an island property. Without local experience, some depend excessively on performance from general contractors and structural engineers to work out structural details on site. On site and on paper are two different things.

Bringing in a structural engineer when the design is complete leads to delays in the progress of a project. The engineer brings solutions that may require design alterations to make the built form structurally stable. The architect may find it is impractical to accept and incorporate those said changes in the design. The project can remain in a standstill until all concerned parties are in mutual agreement. This can lead to escalating costs, delays, and in some cases, liens, and lawsuits. This is not what people want when it comes to building their new homes!
